CPSC Releases Report on Recall Effectiveness Research
The Consumer Product Safety Commission awarded Heiden
Associates and its partners a contract to collect and review literature available on aspects
of consumer motivation and behavior that are relevant for understanding response to
product recalls. Working with Michael Jones of XL Associates and Dr. Carol Pollack-
Nelson of Independent Safety Consulting, Heiden Associates obtained and reviewed
several hundred books, articles, and other materials. The report highlighted a number of
potential obstacles to improving consumer response for typical product recalls.

Heiden/McGonegal Article on Amusement Ride Injuries in Injury Insights
The National Safety Council (NSC) newsletter featured an analysis by Dr.
Edward J. Heiden and Senior Research Associate Stephen McGonegal of survey data
collected by the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions (IAAPA)
on injuries associated with fixed-site amusement rides. In "2001-2002 Fixed Site
Amusement Ride Injury Analysis", Dr. Heiden and Mr. McGonegal noted that annual
estimates of injuries based on the IAAPA survey data have been well below those
reported by the CPSC, which must extrapolate national estimates from a limited sample
of participating hospitals. IAAPA has been a Heiden Associates client since 1999.

Gun Industry Litigation Reporter Features Steve Heiden's Analysis of Gun Recalls
Senior attorney Stephen Heiden's research, "An Evaluation of Notices Used in Firearms
Recalls: 1982-2002" was featured in Gun Industry Litigation Reporter.
Mr. Heiden found that there were substantial differences among programs in both the
content of the notice and the ease of participation for affected gun owners. The firm's
president, Dr. Edward J. Heiden, has previously testified as an expert witness in litigation
involving firearms recalls.

The Heiden Report
Every so often, when I feel that Heiden Associates has something interesting to
say to our friends and clients about what we’ve
been doing, we put together a newsletter in the
hope that you’ll decide to spend a few minutes
refreshing your acquaintance with us.
Over the past several months, we’ve been doing
some exciting work in both of our professional
worlds—antitrust and product safety.

In our almost 25 years as product safety and antitrust economic consultants,
we at Heiden Associates have witnessed and kept abreast of substantial
changes in both the substance of what we do and in the way that the
general business of analysis is conducted. One of the most exciting parts
of what we do is to be intellectually agile, versatile, and proficient
enough to use the burgeoning arsenal of tools, techniques, methodologies,
and data to “stay smart” in serving our clients’ needs.

Last year was one of the most productive ever at Heiden Associates.
We conducted a major research study for the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission,
developed new injury estimates for amusement rides, and provided expert testimony in a
number of product liability and antitrust cases. We also had a full schedule as invited
speakers on product risk and recall issues at a number of national safety seminars, panels,
and conferences.

During my 21 years in business I have frequently been surprised by the
interest that people have shown in our work. Not only clients, but also
friends and neighbors, have told me that the insights provided by our
economic and statistical analyses are interesting to a broader audience
than just the readers of the technical journals in which we usually publish.
